Juárez Jail, Mexico (Postcard Friendship Friday)

There are still 6 hours left of Friday if you are on the west coast, so I will consider this entry in "Postcard Friendship Friday" to be on time. This postcard is from about a hundred years ago, and shows the City Market (above) and Jail (below) of Juárez, Mexico.

Juárez, also known as Ciudad Juárez, is a very large city in Mexico, just over the border from El Paso, Texas. It has 1.5 million people, which makes it much larger than, say, Detroit. While everyone's heard of Detroit, far fewer Americans have heard of Juárez or even think of it.

I've seen Juárez. I've not been there, but I've seen it. When I was in El Paso, I looked across the Rio Grande at the city. The buildings there are rather short (compared to El Paso), and occasional monuments and church spires dominated the skyline, such as it is. The city is very sprawled out, also. Juárez is one of two Mexican cities I have seen, but have not actually been to.

Since I've not been to Juárez, I've not been to the jail (assuming, of course, that I would have gone to this jail had I gone across the border!). But I have been to a couple of the jails in Las Cruces, New Mexico, which isn't very far away from El Paso and Juárez. One of them is now a fine restaurant, known as La Posta Mesilla. I blogged about it in a previous post.

What a great postcard! How funny that they considered the city Market to be postcard material. I don't think I've ever seen a market on a postcard before. But sure there are many things I have not seen.

We went to Mexico a couple of times as a kid. I remember my mom telling us not to touch anything and to try not to breathe too deeply. hahaha

I have heard of Juárez. The VP of the company I used to work for was there making sales calls. There was a lot of turmoil there and it is currently called The Most Dangerous City in the World (it was when the VP was there, too).

I read that the murder rate there is 3 times what it is in the worst murderous US city.

Juarez has some very good eats!

Are those postcards watercolors or photos..nice stuff there.

Doing research for this, I found a New York Times article on Cuidad Juárez' great restaurants.

It seems kind of strange to combine a market and jail on the same postcard. They look quite similar however.

What a beautiful gently colored postcard. I loved the history lesson, too. (grin)

Happy PFF!

imagine advertising restaurants in the most dangerous american city. (i didn't say u.s.a.) imagine going to eat and getting killed before the meal. that would be a hoot!

Crazy.

Like Detroit or Gary?

I have been to Mexico a couple of times but don't recall the buildings looking typically like that. There again, it was neither 100 years ago (nearly but not quite) nor did I visit a jail. A great card to have.
