This postcard, published by the Alabama Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, says on the back "Space Shuttle Enterprise lands at Redstone Arsenal Airfield March 13, 1978.
According to Wikipedia, "Construction began on the first orbiter on June 4, 1974. Designated OV-101, it was originally planned to be named Constitution. However, a write-in campaign caused it to be renamed after the Starship Enterprise, featured on the television show Star Trek."
I remember at the time, comedian Dennis Miller hosted a segment of Saturday Night Live called "Weekend Update". He showed a photo similar to this and said "There we have it. For the first time, we have photographed aircraft mating in midair"
The shuttle has been adopted into "Star Trek" itself, and appears in the opening intro for the TV show Star Trek: Enterprise, (below) and also in the movies where they have displays of the different vessels that have had the name Enterprise.

Space travel is intriguing as is this postcard. Good choice for today!
This is pretty x rated dmarks! Those planes are really going at it!
Shuttles do it in the air!
I got to see The Columbia land in California a long time ago. One of the most exciting things I've ever seen.
Great posting.
I was into Model Rockets in Jr. High. Last one I made was an SST that also carried the Space Shuttle on its back, designed to eject and glide during the midflight of the SST. it was cool, but I never finished it.

I find myself at a disadvantage after the previous comment. I'll limit myself to saying "great postcard"! In fact I've never seen a space flight postcard before.
In 1987 I was lucky enough to see the shuttle carried over Montreal on the back of a Boeing aircraft. Not too sure what it was doing in Montreal airskies but it was very exciting for all of us to see something with our own eyes that was going out in space.
Thanks for the memories!

Happy PFF to you .
What will those planes
be doing next ?
Great postcard.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a fantastic weekend.
Happy Trails
I remember it well.
BTW where did you think little shuttles came from?
The only Transformer I ever owned was a transforming space-shuttle.
Half-humanoid, half-shuttle. I'd hate to imagine the unnatural act that resulted in that!
I remember the hope we had for the shuttle. A couple launches a week and carry cargo into space for around $100 a pound. That didn't work out too well.
How VERY wonderful!
I’m sorry I am coming by so late for Postcard Friendship Friday. My parents were involved in a roll-over accident on the freeway last Monday. Miraculously both of my dear parents survived and are recovering, leaving little time for blogging. I had a few minutes just now, though, so here I am.
Happy PFF!
