I've read recently about Johnny Depp playing the Mad Hatter in the next movie version of "Alice in Wonderland". I remembered Tom Petty as the Mad Hatter in the 1985 music video for "Don't Come Around Here No More". I didn't think he did a bad job of all. Click here to compare him to the original John Tenniel illustration. Tom Petty's long hair and long face actually make him closer to the original than you'd expect.
Tom Petty revisited postapocalyptic science fiction in the Kevin Costner movie "The Postman", in which his character was Tom Petty, a man who was a famous rock star before civilization fell.Click here to see the music video for "Don't Come Around Here No More" on Youtube.

I'm also reminded of a great old Tom Petty music video from 1982 called "You Got Lucky". The Youtube video is below. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic science fiction world as per "Damnation Alley" or the "Mad Max" movies. The sky even has the same chromakey nuclear storm effect from "Damnation Alley". Tom sports a Mad Hatter-like hat in this video also, but the overall look is more Mad Max than Mad Hatter. Fans of classic 1970s science fiction TV should make sure to go to 2:37 on the Youtube counter in the video to find out exactly who destroyed civilization.

I've always been a Tom Petty fan and I like both of the songs featured in the videos if not the videos themselves. Great way to mention so many good things in one post.
Tom Petty has always been grievously underrated in my eyes.
What a wonderful post dmarks! I loved every single thing about it. Great links and great tie-ins.
I am a big Tom Petty fan. You are right... he is a better match to Mad Hatter than Johnny Depp! How could I have forgotten this? I'm so glad to have gotten to see these.
Big Cheshire Grin!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers put on a great live show. Petty is a very versatile song writer and a long time favorite.
I still wonder if Tom Petty's role in The Postman was offered to Ringo Starr.
I had not heard that Ringo was considered for "The Postman", but I think he would have fit the role well. It would have also tied into the "Richard Starkey" thing they had in the movie.
I remember the Alice in Wonderland Tom Petty video. He could easily play the Mad Hatter in the AIW remake, but could he play it as weird as Depp would? Depp was scary weird in Willy Wonka. I guess that's what the Hollywood suits are going for.
I remember that Tom Petty video.
(Yeah, you can always count on me for deep comments. :) )
The Alice Tom Petty video was a classic but I can't seem to recall the other one. Maybe because I was 4 when it came out?
Love Tom Petty.
Enjoyed the "You Got Lucky" video. Tom Petty is one of my rock heroes yet has been sadly neglected here in the UK.
After all these years, Tom Petty continues to make great music. I was at the Super Bowl last year, and his live performance was amazing.
