Voices from MARS

Going through some of the files my dad left behind, I found this sticker and was reminded that, for a time, my dad was a man from MARS. MARS as in the Military Affiliate Amateur Radio service, that is. According to Wikipedia, "The program is a civilian auxiliary consisting primarily of licensed amateur radio operators who are interested in assisting the military with communications on a local, national, and international basis as an adjunct to normal communications."

MARS still exists (so yes, there is life on MARS), even though the number of ham radio operators continues to decline. As a kid, I thought it was cool that there was an organization called MARS.

How fascinating! I never knew they existed. What a neat way to be of service to the country. Great sticker too.

Men from MARS! You'd be the son of a martian. Oh, I could keep on with this one. But I best not. ;)

Our backyard abuts the city limits, and beyond it is a fairly large acreage with a house. The former owners farmed and when he died and new people bought the place we were terrified they had intentions of subdividing. To our amazement and pleasure they are a reclusive couple from California...bit ham radio buffs. He installed a huge receiving tower in the field and they farm some around it. Our large trees block the view of the tower. All is well.
This was very cool learning about MARS and your dad.

Very interesting, I'd never heard of that before. Life on Mars...I don't know if I would walk around saying my dad was from MARS though....you might get a few strange looks. :-)
