Craigslist

I recently decided I needed to get a new computer, but did not want to pay the high Best Buy prices. So I did what I had done in years past: I checked the newspaper classified ads. But lo and behold, there were hardly any ads there anymore, and the print was larger than it used to be. Not the same as it used to be, and no ads for any computers at all.

So I checked Craigslist, and found lots of computers. Good deal. No need to bother with newspaper classifieds anymore, is there?

I also decided I needed to ask for some merchandise, so I put in a "Wanted" ad on Craigslist. Within a day or two, I got 3 responses. Two of them were offers of the merchandise I was looking for. The third was from someone offering me money. Yes, offering me money. I think loan sharks are circling in the Craigslist waters. What experiences has anyone had with Craigslist?

My husband was selling an old BMW bike on craigslist and was sent a check for way more than he was asking for it. He was to cash the check, keep the amount that was his and send them the rest of the mony back by wire. Scam! Out of Nigera according to the polce. It is common on craiglist we found out. Sharks indeed. Beware - if it is too good to be true, it is too good to be true.

Crazy: Good point. I'd heard of those scams.

Another one is what I would call a floating burglary. Like Larry Niven's flashmobs or Permanent Floating Riot Club.

These are the "pranks" where someone put's a third party's adress on Craigslist, with an ad to say to come bust down the doors and clean out the house, it's all free.

Tara: Who else would you expect to see but Craig? :)

And I can't find an actress with Craig in her name. Not a well known one, anyway. Jenny Craig's name is well known, but not her face.

My experiences with Craigslist have been fine. Any iota of common sense seems enough to protect you for the most part. The scams are not all that clever.

I have always had excellent luck with it as well, although I have never sold anything just purchased or looked for apartments.

Dmarks: I wanted a “Body by Jake Butt & Thigh Sculptor.” However, brand new it cost over $300 and then there was the S&H cost. I waited and waited, but the price never came down. Then last fall my sister told me about Craigslist. I had never heard of it before. I told the leap and checked it out. Guess what? I not only found my machine, but it had only been used ONCE and it was only $100! It took my husband and I 30 minutes to meet the guy at an Eat ‘n Park restaurant and voila, I had my machine. In short, my experience was inexpensive and easy.

I've never used it, but I do appreciate your photo.

Pamela: I first read that as a product called "Body" by someone named Jake Butt. Good that you found a good deal!

I have never used it. However, my friend Kathy has furnished her entire house that way... very inexpensively. She is thrilled with it.

You sound like a careful shopper.

My experience is that you won't find Daniel Craig on Craigslist. ;-)

P.S. You forgot Yvonne "Batgirl" Craig.

I have only bought one thing off Craigslist and that was a cheap file cabinet. I personally would never buy any electronics off of there, to many ways to hide defects.

I tried to sell a new fridge on Craigslist and got one person who made an appointment to see it and then didn't show, and another who tried to bargain to an absurdly low price, both on the phone and again when he got there. I endedup giving the fridge to charity.

I did go look at a computer someone was selling on Craigslist. It was nice, except when I ran the program I wanted to test, it looked very bad. No dice.

I have zero experience with Craig's list.

I am old enough to remember Yvonne Craig.

I hear that now you can buy brand new cars on e-bay.

My (semi)husband bought a 55 gallon aquarium on Craig's List. I'm surprised he didn't try to sell me on it.
