Triffidy plants

I was commenting on Ananda's blog about how giant sunflowers look Triffidy. As in, like a tall scary plant. I thought I had coined the word, but I guess there is nothing new under the sun. Googling "Triffidy", I find it has already been defined:

"in the nature of a triffid [adj]"

Now is the time of year for Triffidy plants, for sure. You can walk through 8 foot tall cornrows in many parts of the country. I've seen chickory weeds go to 8 feet. And of course there are the sunflowers. With their giant faces, that can turn. Always watching...
So, what's growing tall and scary in your area?

Weeds, late blooming wild flowers and tall sunflowers populate the neighborhood. The grass in our yard, however, is dead due to a lack of water.

Triffidy is great. I had no idea it was already a word.

Other words come to mind, too.

"I had to weed the garden, because it was embarassing in its triffidity."

What fun! Thanks for the mention. You've seen mine. Though there is a killer castor bean stalk in my town too. I should photo it.

I didn't know that about "Triffidy" !

hahahaha on your "triffidity".

"Family Guy" last night featured a particularly triffidy sunflower that like to harass Cleveland.

Triffidy bouganvilla grows all over in Glendora. I am so using that word from now on.

I have a moonflower vine that pulled the trellis right over. It's out of control.

I believe that the sunflower was actually one of the triffid's ancestors, if that is the proper term.

I haven't checked on the progress of the new series. I should go do that.

I saw a scary 6 foot tall thistle plant yesterday.

Laura: Triffidy Bouganvilla sounds like some sort of strange ethnic name. A woman's name, probably.

Secret: Today the trellis, tomorrow the world!

Laughing: That show came to mind as I made this post. I should look for it online.

Don't know what the scientific name is, we call them elephant ears. They grow like crazy around here.

Also, there is a kudzu-like stinky weed that invades other plants and will cover them if allowed to propagate. Pulling them releases a vile stench. Ugh. They may not be triffidly large, but they're prolific.
