Polar Bears - Postcard of the Day

Today's "Postcard of the Day" was printed in 1999. It was, I am pretty sure, an insert card in National Geographic magazine, and it was to advertise for subscribing to the magazine.
To the left is a Flickr photo of the annual "Polar Bear Plunge" in Empire, Michigan, from the winter of 2009. The photo was by "joerbius". The plunge is part of Empire's "Winterfest" which takes place in February. Basically, people go swimming in freezing water in the middle of the winter. I think Suttons Bay at one time had a polar bear plunge, too. Both Empire and Suttons Bay are in Leelanau County. It's too early for the Polar Bear Plunge right now, so in the meanwhile, enjoy a nice fresh cold bottle of Coca Cola.

Suttons Bay indeed had a polar bear plunge. My husband has stories about it. (No, he never participated.) I think the baby polar bear has the best idea, up on mama's back away from the ice! Very appropriate for the weather, dmarks.

You'd think the polar bear plunges would have problems with people getting heart attacks from the sudden shock of the water and all. Hope not, but it could happen.

They need a "Sleeping Polar Bear" plunge over on the other side of the county.

As a bear fan, I really enjoyed this post :-) I am not enough of a fan to want to emulate them by diving into icy water though. Brrrrr...

I like the post card! And the coke bear.

I have a friend who was born on Jan 1st... every year he celebrates by jumping into the Columbia river on his birthday. Every year he tries to get me to do it with him and every year my answer is the same... no way!

Are those swimmers CRAZY? Oh, I guess that's the point. Cute bears!

I swam in Lake Michigan in late September once. The air temp was about 50 and the Lake was warmer. I would totally participate in the polar bear plunge. I love thrills! Maybe I will participate this year - 2010. :)
