Brother, can you spare a Zachary?

I bought a paper today and was surprised to find a different looking shiny coin in the change. I looked at it, and it was a Zachary Taylor Dollar.

I'd never heard of it before. And Zachary Taylor? The guy who tops the list of Presidents nobody has heard of? I suppose it's easier than naming a coin after Bill Clinton or Ronald Reagan. Name a coin after Taylor, and everyone in the country will say "Who?" as opposed to half the country jumping for joy while the other half seethes with outrage.

Maybe this one will work. I've seen the other attempts over the years. Remember the Susan B. Anthony quarter... erm dollar? It did look too much like a quarter. Or the Sacagawea giant penny. Well, it was a dollar, and it quickly tarnished into a giant penny. And the US mint decided to promote the hell out of it and never bother to release it to the public until months later, when the hype had worn off, and it was too late for acceptance. I grumped about these coins before.

Who knows. The Zach might work. Has anyone else seen these?

I had no idea such a coin existed. It certainly has not been promoted. I used to get dollar coins back in my change at the post office when I bought stamps. Now those machines use a debit or credit card and I miss the odd dollar coins.

And the Zach is indeed odd.

I was starting to wonder if you had slipped into some Jack Finney story, but it appears that there are now fourteen dollar coins that I was unaware of, with more on the way, mostly presidents.

Too bad though. You could have bought a train ticket to some other timeline where you don't have health problems and the economy is better.

I misread that for a split second, and thought of "fourteen-dollar coins". Well, that would not surprise me either, anymore.

I did have an odd science-fiction musing about this coin as I walked from the store to the car. Imagine one with Taylor from Planet of the Apes on the front. And I suppose on the back it would have the Statue of Liberty mostly buried in sand.

But yes this Taylor coin is like alternate reality.

Imagine the possibilities. For instance, a new slang word for dollar--zack! I like it!

I've never heard of it. Sounds like their on a role with promotions for these coins.

I had not heard one peep about them!
If I had gotten one before hearing about them, I probably would not even heard a bell ring in my head over his name for awhile. I'd be wondering if I'd gotten stuck with another Canadian coin. Ha.

I haven't received one in change, but I've heard of them:

Never heard of it before this post, but I just looked it up. I guess there should be a few of them around. I'll be on the lookout!

First, I've heard of it. I did a google search and found that there is a series. I cannot imagine going to the expense of a "James Buchanan" or let it never be an Andrew Johnson dollar!

I heard they were going to do a series of US president dollar coins, sorta like the US state quarters, but I've not seen one turn up yet.

Alas, I'm pro-dollar coin but it seems the US mint is pretty half-hearted about it every time they try it.
