Perpetual Timothy

Passing through Amish country this evening, I happened by a produce stand. It was particularly well constructed, and was in front of an Amish house with horses, buggy... and no power lines. No phone, no lights, no motorcar. The sign on the door said: "Notice. We ask that you would please dress modestly when you come in our Stand. We believe the Bible teaches modest dress. Read 1 Timothy 2:9 Thank you"

There are of course many version of that Bible verse, and I do not know which the Amish prefer. Here is the the verse from the "New Living Translation", one I had not heard of before:
"And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes."

And here's the tomato shelf inside. There were also some hot peppers. It's late in the tomato season, and they are running out, but these are some pretty nice tomatoes.

Has anyone been through Amish country (anywhere), or gotten any good roadside fruit or vegetables lately?

How interesting. There are no Amish in my area. We have an offshoot of the Mennonites and also Russian Old Believers. Where the Mennonite types all dress extremely conservatively (women in long dresses, long hair in buns covered by crocheted doilies) they don't post signs like these at their fruit stands. They are, however, standoffish!

Why aren't men admonished to dress modestly in the Bible? I could stand to see a lot fewer cracks, thank you.

I'm seeing them all the time now.

Lydia: I'm thinking they are not standoffish if they want you to come to the house to get the tomatoes.

Secret: Good question. I think there are some old Old Testament dress rule, but I will have to look them up.

I don't know of an Amish community in this area. There are several Farmer's Markets in neighboring cities for fresh produce. Modest dress does not seem to be at the forefront of anyone's mind :-)

I expected timothy with a little t and thought you meant perennial, even after I read the post. Had to go back and look at the chapter and verse reference. The request seems reasonable.

One of our customers, a family of local builders, is Mennonite. I heard they moved from Pennsylvania but I'm not sure if they're Amish. The women wear the long, high-neck dresses. I see them shopping at Walmart on a regular basis, so they don't seem too worried about seeing inappropriate dress.

I wish we had some Amish country around here to go through.

Passing through Sidney, NE
last year, I was surprised to see an Amish family in a restaurant jabbering on cellphones. Apparently Timothy didn't mention that modern curse, for it is not uncommon among the
Amish folk....

Laura; I guess they are all over Michigan. The oddest encounter I had was seeing a buggy on the road that had a Playboy air freshener in its windshield.

Turns out the tomatoes are delicious.

P.J. Knowing they don't like cars, I felt a little odd driving just a ways into the driveway to get to the vegetable house.

3girl: I see a tall Mennonite gent frequently shopping in Meijer (it is like a Walmart supercenter). He has a bluetooth in his ear.

MrManuel: That's a real nice area of the country you are in anyway.

BB: I wonder if they text while driving the horrse buggies.

We have a wonderful food stand just outside of town where we get amazing produce. Nothing tastes better.

We have no Amish here or any other sect that is modest. Not too much cleavage or cracks here... more like flannel shirts and hoodies this time of year.

Those tomatoes are fantastic. I got more of them today.

I am not even attracted to women that spend too much time getting ready in the morning, wear expensive clothes, or wear expensive jewelry.

One reason is because I prefer to not dress to impress myself. And jewelry, ie. gold, diamonds, pearls, and any of that other nonsense is nothing but a scam.

Just looking at a diamond ring or necklace conjures up images of those poor people in Africa that have been killed, mutilated, tortured, raped, oppressed, all in the name of mining diamonds that white folks will buy!

And the rest of it is nothing but a scam, a legal pimp game. Do you know what the mark up is on jewelry? It is so outrageous you wouldn't even believe it.
