This December 1936 "Popular Mechanics" shows a proposed designed that is a predecessor to Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose". It's a type of flying boat airplane, a real behemoth. In this age of 3 hour waits, bad or no food, no room on the plane, and not to mention the TSA, it is interesting to see these happy well-dressed passengers milling about below the plane.

You and the Spruce Goose--still! Takes me back to when we first met in Traverse City. Weren't you on the trail of a book about the SG then?
Ahhh. that was the TIN Goose!
You're right! TIN goose! Silly me--what a goose I am!
I remember old movies, like with W.C Fields, that had people in berths, like on trains, but on airplanes.
I also remember being dressed up by my mother when we took plane rides
Now people dress down, or sometimes run about shirtless.
dmarks- It's kinda the way you have to go, traveling steerage, as we do now. The true first class passengers have their own jets.
I miss even the relative luxury of flights 20 years ago.
There are websites devoted to the old timey glamour of air travel. The Spruce Goose though...now that looks like a good time!
I can remember when the SG was housed alongside the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA.
Hard to believe it became a tourist attraction...
I strongly recommend the movie "The Aviator", a Howard Hughes biopic wiht DiCaprio. Featuring the Spruce Goose, of course.
Also recommended is "Tucker: The Man and His Dream", also featuring Hughes and the Spruce Goose.
Yes, I Remember seeing the Spruce Goose when it was in Long Beach. Impressive Plane and yes, "The Aviator" was a Good Movie, and yet Air Travel has become much less Glamorous. I Guess some are even Showing up at Airports in their Bikinis because of the New Full Body Scanners.
