I heard yesterday on NPR that singer Gerry Raffery died yesterday. Most will know his music: he's a three-hit wonder on just about all of the classic rock stations, with "Baker Street", "Right Down the Line" and, with his earlier band, "Stuck in the Middle With You".
It's "Baker Street" I mainly know him for. I remember the FM rock radio stations playing the hell out of this song in the late 1970s. This, and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". I can't recall two other songs that were played as much during that time.
I'm not sure what the song is about, but it makes me think of Sherlock Holmes, the famous fictional resident of Baker Street in London.. I might very well be on Baker Street soon; a trip might take me there. I'm sure I'll have this song, with is screaming sax lines, in my head at the time.
If anyone remembers FM rock radio, do you remember other songs that were played in extremely high rotation other than the two that I mentioned? Other comments are welcome also.

I don't know too much about Gerry Rafferty. I guess there were a few years when he couldn't release any music because of contract disputes with Stealers Wheels?
I love Right Down the Line, but Baker Street was truly...unavoidable. Aside from that, I seem to remember an awful lot of disco on the radio at that time :-)
I loved that song. It reminds me of junior high. I think it's about alcoholism...
Poor old Sherlock was more into cocaine, I think.
Hi Dmarks,
Yeh, I Like Gerry Rafferty. I Recognize all of the Songs that you Mentioned and they are all Great Songs.
Say. I could Use your Help Over at my Blog. I'm being Blasted by Two Liberals Relating to the Subject of Socialized Medicine and that Obama is not Really a Socialist. I would Love your Input. I'm Discovering that I've Been Surrounding myself with too many Liberals Lately and it is beginning to Get to me.
Baker Street is a decent song that I grew sick of because they played it so often.
Besides Right Down the Line, Rafferty's other good songs include City to City, Home and Dry, and Get It Right Next Time. Check 'em out if you haven't heard them.
I Probably have Heard them, for there are a Whole Bunch of Songs that I've Heard, even though I do not Initially Recognize the Title. I've Heard and Like all Three of the Songs that Dmarks Mentioned. I also Like "Get it Right Next Time". I'll be Back when I have some Extra Time to Actually Listen to some more of this Music.
I didn't know his name, but I did remember his song, "Stuck In The Middle With You,". When this song was played, I used to chase my younger sisters and smack them on the back and say, "Pleeeesee". I'm sorry to say, they are still traumatized by this. I feel like a worm.
