Geraldine Ferraro Dies

I saw in the news today that Geraldine Ferraro died.

She's one of the few politicians I have seen in person. She came to a rally at Michigan State University, where she was campaigning for Mondale-Ferraro.

She was recently part of the Hilary campaign, and got in trouble (rightly so I think) for making racial statements about candidate Barack Obama.

The differences political views aside, she did pave the way for Sarah Palin.

Other politicians I've seen include Gerald Ford (I shook his hand), independent candidate John Anderson, and Dan Quayle.

I might have seen George W. Bush as a dot in the distance at a rally. If that counts, then I've seen the Pope too.

Somewhere I have a photo I took of her at the campaign rally. But I can't find it. Instead, here is a 1934 picture of MSU, showing Beaumont Tower. Beaumont Tower is in a parklike area at the center of the campus. Geraldine Ferraro had her rally close to it.

That's quite a number of politician closeups. When I was a college freshman, I
shook JFK's hand when he was campaigning and spoke at our school. My sole claim...

I was sorry to read of her death. She did pave the way for other women in politics and that is a great accomplishment in itself.

Having shaken JFK's hand surely must be the crown jewel of 20th century political handshakes.

In my life I shook Ted Kennedy's hand at a "T" station in downtown Boston.

And although I was trying to shake Hilary Clinton's hand while walking on the Coronado Beach in San Diego, I, instead walked in front of President Clinton who held out his hand for me to shake instead. Ha.

And just a few weeks ago, while driving north on 93 toward Boston, I passed President Obama's motorcade going south on his way to speak at a school in Dorchester.

Does that count?

Shaw, thanks for the comment too

"I passed President Obama's motorcade going south on his way to speak at a school in Dorchester."

If that counts, then it counts the time in 2008 I walked by the White House, and President GWB, McCain, and Obama were all having a meeting there about the big stimulus. Might not have been as close as the motorcade tho.

I was sorry to hear of Ferraro's passing because she was a democrat whose opinion I respected.

My daughter's dear friend's dad was in the Secret Service and they routinely meet presidents and their families.

My own experience with pols is slim. I have been at one rally for G.W. Bush and saw him but only at a distance. And though I didn't get any chills up my leg, I'm glad I attended the event.

On our way home from Orlando once, we noticed that there was no traffic on the other side of the highway. Soon enough, we saw the G.W. Bush motorcade drive by. We honked the horn.

I did, however, meet the incoming Mayor of Tampa, Bob Buckhorn. He even let my dog lick his face.

Gees, when I lived in DC, I used to see loads of politicians. Especially at the airport. I saw Al Sharpton fixing his hair in the bathroom at the airport one time. No joke. I saw Kerry hustling through the airport...and a little while later...I saw Kennedy.
