Check out the gas prices from this old photo from 1971 at a JC Penney service station in Winona, Minnesota, I bet none of you ever knew that Penney's sold gasoline.
Been through Winona about 25 times. Been lost in Winona about 25 times. ..it is that mysterious highway 43 that cuts off I-90 and heads up through town to the Mississippi bridge . Luckily, the locals are understanding with out of town idiots...
BB: Can't imagine getting lost in Winona. Landmarks like Sugar Loaf are always visibie... and for that matter, you can see Wisconsin anywhere in town.
As for the Interstate Bridge, I found a photo of it on a page in the photo album near this gas price photo.
AOW: Penney's had a bright idea at one time of having the regular Penney stuff along with groceries... all in one store, under one roof. Preposterous idea? Never worked.
Never saw a Penney's selling gas, but here's how old I am: my boyfriend and I once pooled our resources and came up with 50 cents to put gas in his little Rambler. How far did we go? Cars didn't get nearly the mileage they get today. Also, what was minimum wage? I'm remembering $1.15/hour.
I remember gas prices like that, but not JC Pennys selling gas. I also recall gas wars... service stations lowering their price to undercut the station across or down the street. I didn't get my license until 1973.
Silly: This same Penney store had a gas war with a nearby Red Owl gas station (yes. the Red Owl grocery sold gas too). The prices got much lower than what you see in the photo too.

Oh, for anything close to those gas prices again!
Never saw a Penney's gas station before.

PJ: As long your trip was downhill both ways, you should have been good.

I can beat you P.J. Rath. I started off at McDonald's in 1974 at $.91 an hour. Not that I even earned THAT back then.
I didn't. I only remember a JC Penney's in the mall in the 80s then.
Is this from a postcard?
No, it is from a family photo album.
