From June 30, 1978. Advertising "Grease" at the Plaza Cinema (now a Meijer parking lot). I remember going to see this when it first came out. Perhaps at this same theatre.
"Grease" was never a period 1950s musical. It was retro kitsch. I thought it "over the top" when it first came out. Kind of a comic book version of teenage life. Not that I was a teen in the 1950s!!!
5ft3: I hear several songs from it on the radio at all times. I've never heard any songs from any earlier versions, though, so I wonder if the songs were a lot different or something?
Beck: I saw it in my mid teens.
Laura: If she got so slutty, why didn't she sing "Let's get physical... physical" ?
Leticia: How old do you think is old enough to see it?
PJ: Yes, it was comic bookish. And didn't they drive into heaven at the end?
More Grease memories come back. I remember that Jeff Conaway, "Kenickie", died less than a year ago. I remember him well from "Babylon 5".
And whatever happened to Stockard Channing? Well, I see now she was in "The West Wing", so she has kept her career going. She was practically middle-ages when she played a teenager in "Grease".
Speaking of risque, my old high school (all girls Catholic) did Grease a few years ago so I took my kids thinking they would clean up some of the "bad" stuff, but they didn't! I was shocked!

It's a classic!
Yup...I saw it at the drive-in when I was 5. That's when I fell in love with JT.
I was in high school when this came out and I loved it. Back then, I thought it was awesome that Sandy got all slutty for Danny. Now, not so sure :)
I can't watch that show with my kids. I am surprised my mother took us to watch it.
It is a bit risque. As a kid, I really never got the "sex" part of the movie.
My boys are not allowed to watch it and Olivia Newton John said she wouldn't let her kids watch it either.

Yeah, it doesn't seem very Catholic-friendly, when they sing about someone being "lousey with virginity"
