| Winona LaDuke |
Relevant to a
recent conversation on another blog, here is a photo I just now ran across of Winona LaDuke in Traverse City, Michigan, on November 21, 2000. At the time, she was local to the area, and was on the ticket as Vice President in a (sort of) major national political party. I believe she is only assocated with Northern Minnesota once again now.

I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) it was a few years later that she came to Peshawbestown and gave a talk at the Turtle. I went with a friend to hear her. The nucleus of her talk was the issue of wild rice and the economic competition and biological threat from corporation-farmed, so-called "wild" rice. Here's an interview I found online with her talking about wild rice:

I few years ago I read her novel, Last Standing Woman. I found it really interesting.
PJ. There's a lot of rice land somewhere in Minnesota, as I recall.
