Graf Zeppelin (Postcard of the Day)

In the mid 1930s, the German derigible Graf Zeppelin (LZ-127) stopped in Akron, Ohio (a city actually equipped with a zeppelin hangar)

The history hydrogen airships is fraught with disaster, but Graf Zeppelin retired quietly, as it was taken out of service after the fallout of the Hindenburg disaster.

Click here [Earthlink.net] for an account of  of a flight from Rio to Akron aboard Graf Zeppelin in 1933,  as seen through the eyes of an eight year old girl

The linen-era postcard view from the mid 20th century also shows a lighter-than-air craft in the skies over Akron, Ohio

You would think helium to be much safer than hydrogen as a lifting gas, but Germany still has bad luck with lighter than air craft .
