Magritte Monday - The Tin Man

A new Oz movie came out last weekend, Oz the Great and Powerful. It's the first real Oz movie since Return to Oz from 1985. For such a great and powerful and iconic franchise as this, close to 3 decades is a long long time between movies. I was too busy this weekend to see the movie, but I hope to see it next weekend maybe.

Rene Magritte - Tin Woodman of Oz
It's an origin story about the Wizard, giving a lot of attention to a matter that is really only covered a little bit in the 14+ "Oz' books. If you recall what is said in the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie about how he came from Kansas, that's pretty much it. The books do reveal that his name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs, for which the initials spell out OZPINHEAD. Not a flattering name.

Thinking about this classic movie and story got me wondering about one thing. Possible plot holes. Did anyone else wonder why the Eagles did not cut The Lord of the Rings short by just carrying Frodo and the Ring quickly from the Shire to Mordor? Yeah, it is sort of like that.

One could imagine someone like the Oscar Diggs (as he is called in the recent movie) being able to bamboozle a primitive human civilization and become a dictator of it by using a large metal head and some electric lights. But what of Oz? Even in the first book it is a wonderland of magic little civilizations, animated trees, talking dolls, flying witches and monkeys and the like. An environment where a guy with a balloon, and a few electricity-related tricks would really not stand out at all as anything remarkable, and shouldn't have any bit of any sort of impact. Perhaps the new movie explains this better.

There haven't been many movies I've wanted to see lately, but this one has me curious!

How could the new movie possibly capture the magic of Judy Garland's trip to Oz? I'll be eager to hear reviews from aficionados.

"Pay no attention to that man behind the screen". Frank Morgan , who played Oz in the '39 film, also played 5 other characters.
Although I'd seen it many times,
never realized that until I looked
it up this morning.

PJ: I am sure it won't. "Return to Oz" didn't either.

I actually want to see this movie, well there are several, like Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Giants (or something like that) and yup, Warm Bodies.

I love sci-fi.

Let me know how it is when you see it!

And yes, I used this one last year. But I brought him back in honor of the new Oz movie.

I'm still recovering from Nipsey Russell as the Tin Man in "The Wiz" (I liked him much better on "To Tell the Truth").

Wasn't "The Wiz" a pondrous, stagey, somber movie? Completely lacking the life and soul that I am thinking the original musical must have had.

Remember how Richard Pryor's Wizard lived in the World Trade Center?

Too bad Michael Jackson didn't get to sing "If I only had a nose" though.

Thanks for the info on the Wizard's name. I had no idea there was a connection between the wizard and hellraiser ;-)

You make an interesting point about plot holes. Like in the recent Walking Dead episode, some wondered why Rick didn't just shoot the Governor when he showed up for the peace summit. Getting rid of conflict too soon doesn't leave much of a story.
